Description

Japan, second half of 19 century, late Edo period (1615-1868) to early Meiji style period (1868-1912).

Large-scale cylindrical wood ground finely decorated in gold and colored takamaki-e with nacre inlays to depict a densely grown field with flowers, leaves, grasses and hollowed interior with a copper liner to hold coals or charcoal for heating rooms, warming tea or sake.

Condition: Good condition with normal age wear and patina. Traces of use, minor nicks, light scratches with a hairline pressure fissure from rim to base. The copper liner with some malachite encrustations.
