England circa 1820, by Thomas Handford of London. With inlaid top opening to the foldout writing surface and fitted interior for writing supplies and campaign style hardware. With label "HANDFORDS  7 Grand St,near Charing Cross".

NOTE: Handford was recorded working as a trunk and portable writing desk maker between 1809 and 1830
