Bio from the Timothy Tew website:
Growing up, the artist spent much of his youth hunting and fishing among the lakes and streams of Colorado, Georgia and Virginia, and as a result, began painting landscapes at a very early age. “Nature is a point of departure for me. I use painting to translate ideas, feelings and mood. My painting is not a literal translation but a statement about emotions. When I have a response to a scene I try to capture the emotion that excited me. It may be the subtlety of morning backlight or the heavy atmosphere after a rain.”
The works begin as plein air studies, done usually in gouache or watercolor, which are then brought into the studio and used as studies for larger oil paintings. Calvin travels to the mountain or coastal regions of Georgia and the Carolinas as well as upstate New York areas that he loves and bring him inspiration. Calvin applies modern techniques to the traditional subject of landscape; creating tremendous depth and contrast by applying multiple thin layers of paint and glaze. His technique creates a soft glow of light, inviting the viewer to walk into the painting.
